How Desk Work Can Affect Your Comfort
Long periods in the same position can leave you feeling stiff or uncomfortable. As the day goes on, you might find yourself leaning toward the screen, reaching for the mouse, or holding tension in your shoulders.
Desk-related discomfort can have several causes. Your workstation setup, time spent sitting, movement habits, and workload may all play a part. Changing positions regularly can be more useful than trying to hold one “perfect” posture all day.
Simple Fixes for Your Workspace
Position your screen directly ahead, with the top around eye level, adjusting for your visual needs. If using a laptop, add an external keyboard and mouse.
- Choose a chair with proper lumbar support
- Keep your mouse close and level with your keyboard
- Alternating between sitting and standing roughly every hour may be helpful
- Get up and move every 20 to 30 minutes
Working from home? The dining table is great for dinner, not for an eight-hour workday. Use a stable laptop stand and swap the dining chair for a proper office chair.
On a standing desk, rest one foot on a small block or footrest (an old-school phone book is about the right size) and swap legs every few minutes to ease pressure on the lower back.
Start with the basics: a screen you can see comfortably, a chair that suits you, and regular chances to change position. If discomfort keeps returning, have it assessed. – Dr Ron Zukerman (Chiropractor)
